Toyota is the world's largest automaker by sales, built on a manufacturing philosophy — the Toyota Production System — that has been studied and copied across nearly every industry, not just cars. It sells everything from the best-selling Corolla and Camry to the Lexus luxury line, and pioneered mass-market hybrid technology with the Prius in 1997, decades before hybrids became a mainstream category.

The company remains substantially controlled by the Toyoda family (three generations removed from founder Kiichiro Toyoda) even though the family holds a comparatively small equity stake, through a culture of long-tenured executives promoted from within and a governance structure that has historically prized stability and long-term thinking over short-term shareholder pressure. That same insular, consensus-driven culture has also been blamed for two of the company's biggest crises: a 2009-2010 unintended-acceleration recall scandal and a 2023-2024 safety-testing fraud scandal at its Daihatsu subsidiary.
