James Clear
b. 1986
James Clear was born in Hamilton, Ohio, in 1986. A standout high school baseball player, he was struck in the face by a swung bat during a game — an injury severe enough to briefly stop his breathing — and spent a long, difficult stretch relearning basic physical and cognitive skills before he could return to any kind of normal life, let alone sports. That slow, incremental recovery is the origin of his lifelong interest in how small, consistent actions compound into large outcomes, and it's the story he opens Atomic Habits with.
He went on to captain the baseball team at Denison University, graduating in 2008 with a degree in biomechanics and later earning a spot on the ESPN Academic All-America team — a result he credits to the same one-percent-at-a-time approach rather than any single dramatic turnaround. Starting in the early 2010s, Clear built a large following through his '3-2-1' newsletter and long-form articles on habit formation and decision-making at jamesclear.com, establishing the audience that Atomic Habits (2018) was written for.
The book became a #1 New York Times bestseller, sold tens of millions of copies, and has been translated into dozens of languages. As of this writing, Clear has deliberately not published a second full-length book, choosing instead to keep developing the same idea through his newsletter, speaking engagements, and an app built around the book's Four Laws of Behavior Change — a single, thoroughly developed body of work rather than a wide bibliography.
